AVANGRID Engages Students To Develop Smart Energy Solutions

The future of energy is clean sustainability. Particularly, this is the vision for the team at AVANGRID. Interestingly, the company held its second Annual Innovation Challenge recently. The main theme of the event was to develop energy solutions for smart cities.

According to a press release, the cities of tomorrow will need smart solutions to power basic amenities. The team at AVANGRID believes that the way we power such amenities with today’s energy infrastructure is quite unsustainable. Further, the cities of tomorrow will heavily rely on smart solutions, hence “Smart Cities.”

Annual Event to Encourage Stakeholders to Develop Energy Solutions for Smart Cities

As per the news release, Smart Cities was the main theme at the Annual Innovation Challenge. In particular, the event brought various stakeholders in the energy sector. Other important participants included university students.

Importantly, the students teamed up with AVANGRID employees to come up with smart solutions for Smart Cities. Eventually, the teams developed proposals which they presented to the AVANGRID executives.

At the center of the collaboration was the desire to tap the upcoming intelligent generation to develop solutions. Interestingly, most of the solutions are for the cities of tomorrow, which will likely benefit these young intellectuals.

According to James Torgerson, CEO of AVANGRID, the aim is to push the sustainability agenda that his organisation championed. In particular, the initiative is to challenge both AVANGRID employees and its customers to think energy smart.

AVANGRID Advocates Clean-energy Technology

This is our opportunity to strategically rethink how the energy sector will forge solutions to tomorrow’s challenges — today,” said Torgerson.

Specifically, the proposals presented were relevant to the development of an urban center. The proposal that promised the most radical changes received cash prizes. As for the criteria, the adjudicating team judged the proposals according to their environmental benefits. Further, they determined whether they had any social and financial benefits to the target cities.

Interestingly, the quest to develop energy solutions for smart cities started long ago for AVANGRID. However, earlier this year, the company entered an agreement with the University of Massachusetts. As per a news release, the partnership involves an expansion of the use of clean-energy technology developed by AVANGRID.

According to the press release, the agreement will see researchers from both organizations work jointly on projects.

The collaboration will bring together researchers from the company and the university to advance the development and implementation of clean energy technologies over the next decade,” the release.
