Gone are the days when one would struggle to access their Bitcoin (BTC) holdings when misplacing or losing digital Bitcoin (BTC) wallet passwords. Passware, Inc. has come to the rescue with an innovation that promises to retrieve any Bitcoin wallet keys lost or forgotten.
Passware becomes the first commercially available forensic software designed for the sole purpose of retrieving passwords. According to the password recovery firm, the new kit will recover passwords from Blockchain.com and Bitcoin Core wallet services.
For the longest time, Blockchain.com support has warned its users it does not have provisions for regaining access to wallets. This is especially the case with lost or forgotten passwords.
“This is because we don’t have access to your wallet or your wallet password,” Blockchain.com support notifies about their inability to help in a statement. If a bitcoin owner loses their digital currency and cannot remember the password they created, they “remain dormant forever as there is no way to uncover the private key(s) that would allow them to be spent again.”
However, that should no longer be a challenge thanks to the new Passware Kit. To recover the passwords, the kit will only require a wallet file typically named as wallet.aes.json or wallet.dat. The software kit is capable of achieving speeds of up to 500,000 passwords per second.
According to Passware CEO, Dmitry Sumin, Passware Kit is an ideal tool for law enforcement authorities. It should go a long way in curtailing free movement of money by criminals; which for the longest time, has helped them operate anonymously. Computer forensics specialists will also be able to strengthen their portfolio of tools needed for investigating cases of extortion and money laundering.
Some of the things that the new kit comes with is the included support for instant decryption of Apple’s file system. The software can also remove passwords for QuickBooks 2018 databases. Additionally, it includes acquisition features of iOS 12.0 backup from iCloud. While it is a much-needed tool, it will be interesting to see how Passware Inc. will prevent criminals from doing their nefarious craft.
