CSAW Games To Kick Into High Gear At NYU Tandon School

The New York University Tandon School of Engineering’s annual CSAW games is the world’s biggest student-led cybersecurity contest. Impressively, it hosts 3,500 teams from over 100 countries around the world. As the contest starts, the best high school, college, and graduate students will advance to the finals.

Already, the preliminary rounds are over, so the organizers released the names of winning teams. In this year’s hackathon, CSAW used a scale that saw 397 finalists emerge from the first exercise. Accordingly, the finalists will travel to academic sites on four continents to compete in the final rounds which will take place from November 8th through November 11th, 2018.

About the CSAW Competition

Previously a small competition when it started in 2003, CSAW Games has expanded to eight events. A brainchild of Nikhil Gupta, a professor of Engineering and Computer Sciences, the CSAW Contest has added the newest contest called Hack3D. As you might have guessed, the latest addition aims to explore the vulnerabilities of 3D printing.

Noteworthy, this competition, which was thus far covering forensic skills, now encompasses training for defenders of real-world attacks.

There is also an all-female category, which will feature three all-girl high school teams. In addition, Tandon and CSAW intend to use this opportunity to encourage more US women to get involved in the field of cybersecurity. This is because they constitute merely 14% of today’s workforce in that space.

What’s in it for the Finalists?

The schools that made the final list include:

• NYU Tandon in Downtown Brooklyn, New York
• Universidad Iberoamericana (Ibero) in Mexico City
• High School of Communication of Tunis in Ariana, Tunisia
• Grenoble-INP Esisar in Valence, France
• Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
• University of Haifa and Ben-Gurion University in Israel

Undeniably, this contest offers more than bragging rights as finalists stand to take home over $1M USD in scholarships. This will take place in the CSAW Red Team Competition in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. What’s more? The NYU Center for Cybersecurity will also award full membership and tuition to first place winners in the three-stage contest.

Other Programs

Apart from the competition, there are other programs on the menu for this year’s event. Worthy of note is the keynote panel discussion. This discussion will be on Thursday, November 8th with NYU Tandon in attendance at the venue. CSAW alumni will chair the panel as it promises to be educative, informative and engaging. Take note though, as the organizers say that the discussion will take place a day before the competition kicks off, so limited tickets are available for interested attendees.

Aside from panel discussion, other programs that will take place include  having multiple speakers, an Industry Fair, Security Quiz Bowl, Cyber Journalism Award, Hack3D, and many others.
