A number of retail chains and food distribution companies across the globe are now tapping into the blockchain technology. Blockchain provides an improved visibility and traceability into products’ lifecycles, for all the participants involved. Now, you can even view the history of your Thanksgiving turkey.
Minnesota-based American food distributor Cargill experimented with a blockchain-enabled tracing for the first time during last Thanksgiving. The American food giant launched a traceable turkey program after years of survey.
The company’s Honeysuckle White brand found that nearly 88% of consumers demanded an increased visibility into food production. Moreover, a whopping 80% preferred their Thanksgiving turkeys coming from family farms.
With such a huge number of consumers showing interest, Cargill also decided to leverage the potential of the blockchain. Last year, Honeysuckle White announced to engage four of its turkey farms in a blockchain-based traceability program.
All the turkeys coming from these farms to the Cargill stores had a special code on their packaging. Just by entering this code on their smartphones, customers have a complete view of the details of their sumptuous Thanksgiving dinner.
Back then, the press release also noted that “Cargill will use the pilot to learn more about the value of traceability in its turkey supply chain.”
With a successful experimentation last year, Cargill now plans to reintroduce the program to this year’s Thanksgiving. However, to cater to a greater number of customers, it will include a full third of Honeysuckle White’s fresh Thanksgiving turkeys.
While the Texas shoppers were the major beneficiaries last year, this year’s traceable turkeys will be available to metropolitan areas in 30 different states. this includes Nashville, Seattle, Denver, and other markets across the Midwest.
Honeysuckle White brand manager, Kassie Long, says “We launched this program as a pilot in 2017 and are expanding it this year to meet increased consumer demand for farm to fork transparency.”
However, the Honeysuckle White report shows that consumers aren’t the only ones demanding this program now. Even farmers have “expressed an overwhelming interest in participating in the traceable turkey program.”
This year’s turkey program will see the Thanksgiving delicacy coming from more than 70 family farms. Moreover, the turkey codes this year will allow customers to directly engage with the farmers. This will also provide them with a better understanding of the agricultural supply chain.
Along with the farm’s location, the codes will also share a story of the farm by providing personalized messages and photos of each participating farmer. Moreover, shoppers electing to buy Honeysuckle White turkeys will also get an early holiday present.
