Air France-KLM joins a growing list of airlines that have set sights on blockchain technology. The European airline giant has inked a partnership agreement with blockchain travel company, Wind Tree. The two are to work together in exploring ways to reduce customers’ costs while leveraging the digital ledger technology.

The alliance is also to explore ways that Air France-KLM can use blockchain technology to cut out costly intermediaries. By doing away with intermediaries, the airline hopes to be more competitive when it comes to travel offers. The airline remains confident that the technology will help strengthen its competitive edge.
Wind Tree has inked a number of agreements in the travel industry in the recent past. Its B2B platform currently allows users to access a wide range of offers ranging from flights to hotels. As part of the new agreement, Air France-KLM is to help the firm on new technological developments. The airline is also to test new technologies and provide feedback with the aim of enhancing development progress.
Air France-KLM executive vice president, Sonia Barrier, expects the technology to revolutionize experiences in the industry.
“With a long-standing commitment to innovation with start-ups and partners, Air France-KLM is constantly creating the future of travel and devising solutions to make the travel experience easier and more personalized. With Blockchain technology, we aim to revolutionize exchanges within the travel industry for our customers, companies, and start-ups,” said Sonia Barriere, EVP of Strategy and Innovation at Air France-KLM.
Blockchain in the Airline Industry
Air France-KLM is not new to using technology to enhance customer experience. However, this is the first time it is diving into the blockchain space as it looks to achieve a heightened customer satisfaction. A partnership with Wind Tree thus affirms the airline’s innovation strategy. The strategy focuses on devising new solutions with the aim of simplifying travel experience while making it personal.
Blockchain technology is poised to have a revolutionary impact on the airline industry. The technology has the potential to transform how passengers purchase tickets. The technology will also transform how airlines store data at a time when data security and privacy is a big issue.
Blockchain technology should also simplify baggage-tracking and maintenance logs of aircraft, which are widely stored on paper. The likes of Air France-KLM could also use the technology to ensure maintenance parts are legitimate. However, registering passengers’ travel documents promises to be one of its biggest use cases.
