Star Trek star, William Shatner, has come to Ethereum and it’s founder’s defense over the project’s centralization accusations. Ethereum continues to attract negative publicity over how decentralized it truly is.
Centralization vs. Decentralization
However, Mr. Shatner does not share the same sentiments. Ethereum boasts of more geographically distributed nodes than even Bitcoin (BTC). That said, one cannot purport that the project is centralized in total contravention of blockchain fundamental traits. Shatner took to his Twitter account to take a swipe on people portraying Ethereum as a centralized blockchain project.
“Then as a coder – go develop your own blockchain technology where you can be 1000% sure of decentralization. Or shove money in a mattress. I hear that’s only overseen by the bed bug community.” said Mr. Shatner.
The remarks essentially portray a man who knows a lot about the blockchain and cryptocurrency technology. His knowledge comes at a time when most people are struggling to grasp the concepts of decentralization as well as peer to peer systems. The fact that a centralized system is also efficient in processing information further continues to complicate the matter.
Nonetheless, the development of decentralized systems is of great importance, given its dispersed failure points. However, Korea University IT Professor, Kim Hyun Jong, believes distribution is also of importance. Even if a technology uses advanced technology, if it does not sell, then there won’t be a good use of it. If a project is less complicated and ends up selling, then it should enjoy mass adoption in the long run, which is key to growth.
Shatner Is Not the Only Ethereum Defender
Shatner is not the only high profile personality to ramp up support for the Ethereum project. Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, likewise remains upbeat about Ethereum’s credentials and prospects.
Touting it as a global supercomputer, Schmidt remains optimistic of Ethereum becoming extremely powerful. Ethereum figuring out how to achieve global synchronization is something that would go a long way in strengthening its prospects.
Increased adoption is crucial for the success of Ethereum and other blockchain projects. Similarly, endorsement by high profile public figures should continue to validate the technology, likewise trigger mass adoption. Endorsement by the likes of Schmidt and Shatner should also go a long way in growing cryptocurrency awareness.
Cryptocurrencies have struggled to go mainstream in part because of slow adoption. Stringent regulations around the globe have also triggered cold feet among people that would have leveraged the technology. However, growing concerns and a lack of trust in centralized systems appears to begin to accelerate mass adoption.
