Blockchain Course Arrives At University Of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo joins a growing list of higher learning institutions expanding their offering into the blockchain space. The prestigious learning institution has started offering a blockchain course at its graduate engineering department.

Blockchain Course

Blockchain Innovation Donation Course is the name of the blockchain course on offer. Rolled out on November 1st, 2018, the course is to run to October 2021. The university has already received an $800,000 USD donation from the Ethereum Foundation and banking giant Sumitomo Mitsui. Other donors supporting the course include Good Luck Three, JSS Corp, and Money Forward Inc.

The blockchain course will seek to impart valuable insights and knowledge about fintech as well as the game-changing technology. Likewise, the course targets business-minded students with outstanding talent when it comes to mathematics.

Similarly, the University of Tokyo is planning to use the course to nurture future blockchain entrepreneurs. The learning institution is to provide insights into how decentralized networks operate as well as how to implement them socially.

The University of Tokyo joins the likes of Wharton and Stanford that have started offering Blockchain MBA courses. The institutions also offer classes on Bitcoin as they seek to impart knowledge on the workings of cryptocurrencies. In Europe, the University of Nicosia is another notable learning institution offering a blockchain course.

We’re at the point where there’s a critical mass to teach this domain. There will be a real phenomenon in business for the foreseeable future, and five years down the road there won’t be too many major business schools that don’t offer similar classes, said professor Kevin Werbach of Wharton School.

Blockchain Investments

The unveiling of the blockchain course in Japan does not come as a surprise. The Asian juggernaut, just like others, has already taken note of the technology’s potential, when it comes to revolutionizing various sectors. Similarly, various companies, as well as governments, are investing big all in an effort of pushing the blockchain technology to its limits.

Initial indications are that the emerging technology will go a long way in transforming healthcare, banking, real estate, voting, and supply management. For starters, it should help enhance efficiency levels as well as reduce transaction costs.

Companies, as well as governments, have already started donating to learning institutions. Ripple has already committed a $50M USD donation to 17 universities as part of its University Blockchain Research Initiative. The firm has also made a $25M XRP donation into Blockchain Capital Petrel IV. The funds will go towards financing blockchain ventures working on innovations leveraging the technology.
